The MEATER Plus is a completely wireless meat thermometer — no wires connect the probe to a receiver. A single slender probe measures both internal meat temperature and ambient grill temperature simultaneously, transmitting data via Bluetooth to your smartphone app. The wooden charging block extends Bluetooth range to 165 ft and stores the probe when not in use. Setup takes under 2 minutes.
MEATER Plus Specs
| Wireless Range | 165 ft Bluetooth (block acts as repeater) |
| Internal Temp Accuracy | ±1°F |
| Internal Max Temp | 212°F (boiling point) — probe tip only |
| Ambient Max Temp | 527°F (grill/smoker temperature) |
| Sensors | 2: internal tip + ambient (dual-sensor probe) |
| Battery | Probe charged via wooden block (AAA) |
| App | iOS and Android — MEATER app |
| Compatible Ovens | Yes (convection safe up to 527°F ambient) |
Bottom line: The MEATER Plus is the best wireless meat thermometer for most backyard BBQ cooks. True wireless design, accurate readings, and an outstanding guided cook app make it a transformative upgrade from traditional wired thermometers.
Accuracy Testing Results
| Test | MEATER Plus Reading | Reference (ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE) | Deviation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chicken breast (165°F target) | 166°F | 164.8°F | 1.2°F |
| Ribeye medium-rare (130°F) | 131.5°F | 130.2°F | 1.3°F |
| Pork shoulder (205°F) | 203°F | 204.1°F | 1.1°F |
| Brisket (200°F) | 198°F | 199.4°F | 1.4°F |
| Average deviation (15 cooks) | 1.2°F |
The MEATER Plus averaged 1.2°F deviation from our ThermoWorks reference across 15 cooks — within the stated ±1°F spec for most readings. This is sufficient accuracy for all practical BBQ purposes. The Thermapen ONE (at ±0.5°F) remains more accurate, but requires a physical insertion rather than continuous monitoring.
Guided Cook System: The Real Differentiator
The MEATER app’s guided cook system is what separates it from competing wireless thermometers. Select a protein and cut (e.g., “Ribeye — Medium Rare”), enter the thickness, and the app:
- Estimates total cook time based on real-time temperature curves
- Sends push alerts at key stages (ready to sear, time to rest)
- Accounts for carryover cooking — alerts you to pull meat early, so rest brings it to exact target
- Logs the full temperature curve for every cook — searchable history
The carryover cooking calculation alone has saved multiple cooks in our testing. Pulling a ribeye at 125°F (when the app says so) and having it reach 133°F during a 5-minute rest is far more consistent than guessing.
Design: No-Wire Advantage
Traditional wired thermometers require routing cables through grill lids, which creates heat escape points and cable management frustrations. The MEATER Plus’s wireless probe eliminates this entirely. You insert it, close the lid completely, and walk away. There’s no cable to kink, no seal to compromise.
- True wireless — no cables, no heat escape, no cable management
- Dual-sensor: measures internal meat temp AND ambient grill temp with one probe
- Guided cook system with carryover calculation is genuinely useful
- App stores complete cook history with temperature curves
- Works with any heat source: grill, smoker, oven, sous vide
- Single probe — cannot monitor multiple cuts simultaneously (MEATER Block = 4 probes)
- Bluetooth range requires the wooden block within ~33 ft of the grill
- 165 ft range assumes line-of-sight — walls/appliances reduce effective range
- Internal probe max of 212°F means it can’t be used in extremely high-heat searing
