Getting your first smart grill set up correctly the first time saves frustration and ensures your seasoning coat protects the cooking surfaces for years to come. This guide walks you through assembly, app setup, initial seasoning, and your first cook.
Before You Begin
- Find a level, non-combustible surface (concrete or patio pavers — not wood decks)
- Position at least 3 feet from any structure (house walls, fences, overhangs)
- Have your phone charged and ready for app setup
- Buy your first bag of pellets — Traeger Signature Blend is a great starter option
Step 1: Assembly
Unbox all components and lay them out before starting. Most pellet grills assemble in 45–90 minutes with two people. Follow the manufacturer’s manual step-by-step — the sequence matters. Key tips:
- Don’t fully tighten any bolts until all hardware is in place (allows adjustment)
- Keep the leg-to-body bolts slightly loose until the grill is on its final surface for levelness
- Connect the RTD temperature probe (the metal rod) before closing up the control area
Step 2: App Setup and WiFi Connection
- Download the manufacturer’s app (Traeger, Pit Boss, Camp Chef, etc.) from the App Store or Google Play
- Create an account using your email address
- Follow the in-app WiFi setup wizard — you’ll need your home WiFi password (2.4 GHz band, not 5 GHz)
- Name your grill in the app and complete any firmware update prompts
Important: Most smart grills only work on 2.4 GHz WiFi networks. If your router broadcasts one combined network, temporarily disable 5 GHz during setup, or use your phone’s hotspot.
Step 3: Load Pellets
- Open the hopper lid and fill with pellets to the full line
- Turn the grill on and run the “prime the auger” function (most grills have this in the startup sequence or menu) — this fills the auger tube with pellets before your first cook
- Wait for pellets to reach the fire pot (you’ll see smoke begin) — this takes 3–5 minutes
Step 4: Initial Seasoning (Burn-In)
Before your first food cook, season the grill with a high-heat burn-in to cure the paint, burn off manufacturing oils, and coat the cooking surfaces.
- Set temperature to 350°F for 30 minutes with lid open (allows manufacturing residue to burn off)
- Then set to 450°F for 30–45 minutes with lid closed
- Apply a light coat of food-grade high-heat oil (flaxseed or vegetable oil) to the cooking grates using a brush or paper towel during the last 15 minutes
- Let cool completely before your first food cook
Step 5: Your First Cook — Keep It Simple
For your first cook, choose something forgiving: chicken thighs, burgers, or sausages. This lets you learn the grill’s hot spots and temperature behavior without the stress of a complicated cook.
Beginner cook: Smoked chicken thighs
- Season thighs with salt, pepper, and garlic powder
- Set grill to 275°F
- Cook until internal temperature reaches 165°F in the thickest part (approximately 1.5–2 hours)
- Use your MEATER Plus or any wireless thermometer to monitor without opening the lid
Key Rules for Long-Term Performance
- Always keep quality, dry pellets in the hopper — moisture is the enemy of pellet grills
- Empty the hopper and run the auger dry at the end of the season
- Never use lighter fluid near a pellet grill — it can ignite pellets in the hopper
- Cover the grill when not in use — moisture ruins electronics and accelerates rust
- Vacuum ash from the fire pot every 5–10 cooks to prevent ignition issues
